Kerala has plenty of hill stations, but not many of them sit at the very top of a forest where wild elephants wander across the grass. Ranipuram does. Tucked into the Western Ghats in Kasaragod district, right beside the Karnataka border, it's often called the "Ooty of Kerala". Its older name is Madathumala, and you'll still hear locals use it.
The hill rises to roughly 750 m above sea level, with evergreen shola woods, monsoon forest and wide open grassland all packed into a small area. What makes Ranipuram special
It's the mix. One minute you're walking through cool, dark shola forest, the next you step out on to open grassland with the whole range laid out in front of you. In the monsoon the slopes turn a deep, almost unreal green, and mist rolls over the ridges.
Trekking is the main draw. There are walking trails across the hills, and at the top there's a huge rock where most people spend more time than they planned, because the panoramic view is simply that good. The wild elephants add to the feel of the place, though they also mean you should always walk with local guidance and respect the forest rules.
Things to do
- Trek to the peak and the big rock. The climb through the grassland and shola patches is the highlight. Take it slowly and stop often for views.
- Watch for wildlife. Elephants are the famous residents, but you may also see birds and butterflies. Keep a safe distance and never try to approach any animal.
- Take a jeep ride. Jeeps are available locally if you prefer not to walk the whole way up.
- Photography. Early morning mist, rolling grass and long views make this one of the best photo spots in northern Kerala.
- Stay overnight. Cool evenings and quiet nights make a stay worth considering.
When to go
- Monsoon (June to September): the hills are at their greenest and the views are dramatic, but the trail is slippery, leeches are common and clouds can hide the view.
- Post-monsoon and winter (October to February): clear skies, cool air and the most comfortable trekking. Many people consider this the best time.
- Summer (March to May): warm, with drier grass. Start early to avoid the heat.
Weekends are busier. If you want the hills to yourself, go on a weekday and start in the morning.
How to reach Ranipuram
- By road: Both jeeps and buses are available from Panathady and from Kanhangad in Kasaragod district. Panathady is the usual gateway to the hills. Taxis from Kanhangad are also easy to find.
- By train: The nearest railway station is Kanhangad, about 45 km away.
- By air: The nearest airport is Mangalore International Airport in Karnataka, about 125 km away.

Where to stay
There are tourist cottages on the hill that give you a comfortable base and mean you don't have to rush back down after the trek. Availability and booking rules change, so ask the Forest Department or DTPC Kasaragod in advance, especially for weekends and holidays. If the cottages are full, Kanhangad and Kasaragod town have plenty of hotels.
