What is Thenmala ecotourism?
The name Thenmala means "honey hill", and the whole project is designed around the forest. Instead of one big attraction, the area is divided into different zones for different moods. The leisure zone has the gentler stuff: the deer park, the butterfly safari and gardens. The adventure zone is where you'll find the activities that get your heart going, set deep inside the forest. And the culture zone covers the open spaces and performance areas near the dam.
That layout is the clever part. Families with small kids can spend the day on the easy trails, while people who want a bit more action head off to the adventure side, and everyone meets for boating at the end.
Things to do in Thenmala
Cross the suspension bridge
One of the best-loved spots, and a great photo location. The bridge stretches over the forest, and the view of the green canopy and the stream below is worth a pause. Walk slowly, hold the rails and don't stop in the middle if there are others behind you.
Butterfly park and deer park
These two are the easiest wins if you have children, or if you just want something gentle. The butterfly park is best in the sunny hours, when the wings are out. The deer park is quiet, shady and good for a slow stroll.
Safari park
There's a safari park section with forest paths and wildlife viewing. Animals can't be promised, but the walk itself is pleasant even if you don't spot much.
Boating on the dam reservoir
The catchment area of the Thenmala dam is calm, green and surrounded by hills. A boat ride here is a nice way to end the day, and the sunset light on the water is lovely.
The adventure zone
If you want something more energetic, the adventure zone is set right in the middle of the dark, dense forest, which gives the activities a proper jungle feel. Activities and prices can change, so check at the ticket counter on the day.
How to reach Thenmala
- By road: Thenmala is on the road from Kollam towards Shencottah and Tamil Nadu, passing through Punalur. You can get there by KSRTC bus, taxi or your own car, and the drive is pretty, with rubber and forest on both sides.
- By train: The main station is Kollam, about 66 km away. Thenmala itself also has a small station on the Kollam to Shencottah line, but fewer trains stop there, so check the timings if you plan to use it.
- By air: The nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram, around 72 km away.

When to go
Thenmala is a year-round place, but it's most comfortable from October to March, when the weather is dry and cool and the trails are easy to walk. In the monsoon it turns very green and the waterfalls nearby get strong, but you'll need a raincoat, and some outdoor activities may pause in heavy rain. Summer afternoons can feel warm, so aim for mornings or late afternoons.
